The innovations of art differ from the innovations of life and those of scientific theories. The innovations of life are flowing and fast-changing, while those of scientific theories are the everlasting pursuit of invariable truth. What about the innovations of art? Innovations of art are bridges between the inconsistent and the predictable. This is the essence of art, the brilliance that can change our perspectives towards life – cautious but full of adventurous spirits.

One lifestyle may give rise to many different perspectives; the one reality that we all share can incite all kinds of pursuits and aspirations. “Possibility” signifies an attitude of openness and the true respect for personal desire, and is an extension, or perhaps even a part, of the reality. When we talk about possibilities, we acknowledge the dissimilarity or diversity that vibrates among all of us.

Innovation —10 Possibilities is a group exhibition of 10 young artists. We not only see the innovations, but we also see the possibilities – different points of view, and different worlds as seen from the artists’ eyes.

   Differences--Possibilities?

Perhaps art is simply a method of showing possibilities. Art can record the ephemeral thoughts and feelings onto the artists’ lasting work. The differences between artists’ perception and real experiences are usually used as a way to help people realize the true and new reality in the society that they live in. Sometimes stability is hidden behind an individual’s feelings. These “innovative” differences are what artists use to create and explain their works. The need to express for different feelings arrives at the same “reality point“ - artists tend to make apparent their innermost feelings such as depression and despair, and it is this expressive nature of art that presents us with the differences between society on its surface and what lurks below. It is worth mentioning that this constantly created and expressed “differences” especially leave the human beings with confusion and anxiety.

From the ten artists’ “eyes”, the artworks show their inner worlds. We can see that the artists, as observers and reporters, are looking for a state of balance from “eyes” for the outside world to the “eyes” of their inner minds. Their artworks reflect reality, but the works also seem to be far from reality. The theme of the artworks shows the collision between the minds of consciousness and those of the norms of the society, making the artists’ mental world and self-awareness more explicitly. This state - fluctuating between definiteness and indefiniteness - is not the ideal state of life according to our social expectations, but is a state of freedom and action. The “balance point” is centred yet unstable, which can be searched and pondered by the audience, which also serves as the artists’ base for the philosophical search and explanations. This “balance point” presented in the artworks can only be felt and grasped by the viewers. The following is my review to the artists’ exhibitions regarding the difference between their mental worlds and the societal awareness.

The first time I met artist Zhang Zhenyu, he gave me the first impression of being someone calm and tranquil, just like his artworks. He is attentive to details in his life, and he always appears with a peaceful smile. His artwork seems to be narrative and descriptive, aiming to show explicitly the essence of the artwork itself. Obviously, he integrates his deep consideration towards daily life into his artwork. Everyday objects that might become part of the memory of a specific time, such as tax receipt, newspapers, and honorary certificates, are “sculptured” with the artist’s genuine efforts; the realistic portrayal serves as a medium between the artist’s feelings at the moment and concrete objects readily understandable by the viewer’s eyes. These objects are not only as themselves anymore, but they also serve as the mediums for the artist to contemplate on, urging the audience to ponder and reflect on at the same time. This thinking process is a challenge to the “mental inertia” that many people experience nowadays, like an interactive game between the audience and the artist; the process draws the viewers into the world of artist’s creation and urges them to search for the “balance point” themselves.

Artist Song Guiyu has always been making refined art. Even though his artworks have a wide range of mediums and formats, he can never give up his own unique way of symbolizing passion, via which the audience can easily feel his intense emotions in his artistic manner. But behind the torrents of passion, the artist’s strong adherence to his beliefs is always present. His paintings emphasize on the liberation of mind and the release of emotions. This freedom of the mind becomes extremely vivid and thorough with the description of reality. These intense thoughts and powerful feelings contrast with the indifferent and apathetic attitudes often found in our society. It is the artist’s attentiveness, questioning, and awareness that make him successful in establishing profound meanings in his artworks. The pain may eventually be transcended over, but never cheaply. As for the path of transcendence, both Christianity and Buddhism have already given out the answers separately: love for salvation, or renunciation for desire. As a 21st century human being, how would we answer this question? But for now we can only observe and learn from Song’s artwork.

Artist He Jie’s work emphasizes the refined presentation of personal emotions and the pursuit of materialism, by employing the wonderful and fanciful imagination in order to show our idealistic thoughts. The artist has chosen objects that interest him as mediums for his expression, which is reserved but precise. Items like small red shoes, couples in love, cars, houses…these definite choices of mediums naturally show the artist’s strong pursuit of wonder and perfection, but at the same time, making the artist feel disappointed due to the contrast between the passionate, wondrous imagination and the ordinary, mundane reality. The idealistic depictions show the artist’s desire for a better life, his personal attitude and inner-exploration.

As the only female artist in the exhibition, Zhou Ting’s personality and artwork seem to be different than the others. It seems to be the unique attentiveness of femininity that brings a distinct perspective to this exhibition. Zhou Ting is a very talented and hard-working woman. Her diligence and passion are apparent in her artwork; one will find her artwork tranquil but deep, always drip with thought-provoking power. Her artwork looks like those snapshots from daily life, almost feeling like the artist’s own life’s story.

Artists Chen Zhuo and Huang Ke use video (photos) format as their way of displaying their artistic ideas. The contraction of big screen scenes symbolizes strong artistic elements and meanings in their work. Perhaps the artwork is related to a big event, or perhaps it is only a way for the artists to emphasize what they care the most. The obvious and the obscure co-exist in their artwork, bringing us into profound reflections within ourselves.

Artist He Ling’s work is displayed as images as well, but it gives more lively wonders to the audience. It is more like an expression of childlike and youthful thoughts by an adult, making the audience to search, to experience in the joyful fascination.

Artist Wen Tao’s artwork has a strong visual effect, which is consistent with its artistic format. He wants to convey the sense of confusion on the brink of reality and idealism. Scenes like people with luggage, posters seen everywhere… with the artist’s exaggeration of feelings, enabling the viewers to see clearly the gap between reality and emotions through the artist’s expressions and viewers’ self-reflections.

Artist Ou Jin chose materials from real life for his artwork. But by also using abstract expressions, he conveys different attitudes of elements in our lives. By distorting the bodies super slim and long, and exaggerating the voices thunderous and intense… he makes the combination of different elements a special metallic and animal-like ringing sound, establishing unity between the metallic sharpness, and the soft and joyful expression in the entire artwork.

Artist Liu Xudong displays an elderly sort of serenity, with his slight mustache and his casual dressing style. His work has a static and quaint kind of atmosphere. Like his gesture of lying in an old bamboo chair silently, his paintings have been heavily influenced by the traditional Chinese painting style, showing the theme of enjoying life and being free from all care. This almost unusual element of display shows his ideal to the audience: A state of serenity, and a return to a primitive and natural lifestyle.

Artist Ke Fu is an energetic and optimistic artist. In his artworks we can see a blend of the East and the West, with elements from both cultures. Those simplified, abstract symbols representing thoughts and ideas walk inside his imaginary city, making enigmatic movements that always seem to represent some certain ideas. He leads us into a world of illusions to experience his infinite imaginations, and allows us to make attempts to understand how he views the reality.

"Innovation - 10 Possibilities" is a thought-inspiring exhibition of the works of a group of artists who each uses their own artistic methods to convey the differences between the reality and the worlds within their minds. The exhibition displays the artists' personal reflections on society, and these deepened reflections generate possibilities - the possibilities that I regard as the "hope" that lies at the bottom of Pandora's box.
