FOCUS ON CHINA
An Exhibition of CC licensed Photographs of China

Presented by: Creative Commons China Mainland
Sponsored by: The Ford Foundation
Photographers:  Professional photographers Heiming, Hu Wugong, Jiang Jian, Li Jie, Liu Yingyi, Wang Jiangmin, Wang Wenlan, Wang Yuwen, Zhang Xinmin, Zhu Xianmin; top photography contest winners Li Yufeng, Ling Shisheng, Ma Jun; and 38 additional contest winners.
Curators:Chen Xiaobo, Pu Zhuang, Zhu Handong
Location: The Convention Center, Sapporo, Japan
Exhibition Dates: July 29 - August 1, 2008

This CC-licensed photo exhibition consists of two parts.

The first part is made up of the best submissions to the first annual CC-licensed photographic works contest held in 2007, jointly sponsored by CC China Mainland and Nphoto.net.  These works, the majority of which were submitted by amateur photographers, capture the
social, cultural, and scenic flavor of contemporary China, as rendered in eloquent portraits of its people engaged in a variety of activities. Coming from diverse communities of Chinese photography amateurs on the mainland, these contestants bear witness to the trials, tribulations and celebrations of their times, catching the pulse of Chinese society in a visual language which embodies the grass roots spirit of the people.

The second part of the exhibition includes the works of the ten most important Chinese professional photographers who chose to license their works with the China Mainland version of the CC licenses.  Like their amateur counterparts, these photographers also bore testimony to the exciting transformations of Chinese society. Every image in their collection tells the story of a particular social group. As pioneers who have led a significant movement in the history of Chinese photography, their contributions do not stop at creating images. More importantly, they have awakened a sense of social conscience and opened up whole new horizons for their successors.

From the 1950’s to the 1980’s, Chinese photography served as a political instrument of the government. China has not really had a visual history of its people until now. However, after
the 1980’s, photographers on the mainland - both amateur and professional ones, seen on exhibit here - have become aware that photography should have the primary mission of recording the social, the human, and the real aspects of Chinese life. As such, this exhibition brings together the works of grass roots and professional photographers who are articulating this mission and have joined forces in supporting the ideals of open access promoted by Creative Commons.
