Not Vital – "Tongue"

Galerie Urs Meile, Beijing, is featuring a new monumental sculpture by the internationally renowned Swiss artist Not Vital (born 1948 in Sent / Switzerland). The subject of his new exhibition Tongue is a cow’s tongue cast in Italy in plaster, carved in black marble then, and turned in Beijing into a monumental 7.7-meter high stainless steel sculpture. Living in the tiny Swiss village of Sent, Not Vital is creating sculptures within his own park. Whereas most sculpture parks display works in an open area, where they can be seen from a distance, Not embeds them in the forest blurring the ever darkening lines between reality and fantasy, history and present and future with functional works of art which in his world are also known as artful works of function.

Not Vital embodies the spirit of global culture, not as an observer or as a businessman who exploits opportunities, but as a participant in each community’s way of life. His perspective is that of an observant alien with a constantly racing intellect, absorbing and incorporating sounds, smells, visual stimulation, and expressing oblique, incongruous interpretations.

The exhibition Tongue at Galerie Urs Meile, Beijing, is open from April 22 until August 24, 2008. With a number of sculptures displayed at Beijing’s "Currents – Art and Music" it marks the beginning of the artist’s involvement with China and its culture.

诺特•维塔尔－《舌头》

       

北京麦勒画廊为国际著名瑞士艺术家诺特•维塔尔（1948年生于瑞士森特村）举办巨大新雕塑作品展， 展示的作品《舌头》是先在意大利把一条牛舌翻制成石膏模，再用黑色大理石雕成，最后在北京做成的一件高达7.7米的不锈钢雕塑。诺特•维塔尔在他的出生地一个叫森特的小村里生活，在自己的园子中创作雕塑作品。当大部分雕塑公园在开放的空间里展出作品， 展品可以从远处看见，诺特却将它们藏在树林中，诺特用具有功能的艺术作品模糊了现实与幻想，历史、现在与未来之间始终暗淡的界线 在他的世界里，这些作品也是具有艺术性的功能物。

 

诺特表达了全球文化的精神，他不是作为观察者或投机商人，而是以一个在不同生活方式的群体中参与者的身份。他的眼光完全是出自一个认真观察的外来人，借助不断角逐的思维能力，吸收并融合声音、气味和视觉刺激，表达间接、不调和的诠释。

 

      《舌头》展期为2008年4月22日至8月24日。诺特•维塔尔在北京“Currents－Art and Music”展示的一组雕塑和在北京麦勒画廊展示的“舌头” 标志着该艺术家对中国和中国文化的继续参与。
