Introduction(preface):
NOPHOTO is a collective dedicated to contemporary photography created in 2005 with the goal of making possible individual and collective UNCONVENTIONAL projects.
It is characterised by having an open attitude towards contents, a multiple discipline trend in formats, use of multiple supports for spreading the projects such as web and digital projection as well as personal implication in the process of developing and production of these contents.
NOPHOTO makes negation its starting point. NOPHOTO is not a photographers agency, but rather an ATTITUDE.  A way of seeing. A revolution.  A NO (which is handy).
This aesthetic attitude enables NOPHOTO to not renounce any form of creation or exhibition. The works by the collective offer an experienced gaze on daily living that always leads to that which is extraordinary. This process is the result of a group reflection and the interaction of alternative creative processes..

--- Fu zhongwang/ The President of HBMOA

“It isn’t that we like to go against the current, what amuses us is to walk slowly, stumbling, observing the small differences in things,
discovering their rhythms. Attempt to describe an object, revolve around it, caress its shape and cover its entire borders. Ask oneself what it is made of and what role does it play in history. Force oneself to exhaust the theme and not say anything. Force oneself to gaze with simplicity and not resolve anything. Not illustrate, define and not photograph photography. What we like is to de-photograph things and un-name them..”
---Juan Millás/NOPHOTO

Thoughts on“NOPHOTO” Phenomenon

Spain is a beautiful and zealous country on Iberian Peninsular in southwest Europe. When referring to the art of this country, we could hardly miss the masters in Renaissance period, such as El Greco, Velasquez and Francisco de Goya, all of whom left great imprints in the artistic world with their outstanding achievements, besides the grand cave at Altamira, a heritage from their ancestors, and the Alhambra created by the Moors in the middle ages. Even in modern and contemporary period, artists like Picasso, Joan Miro, Salvidore Dali, Antoni Tàpies were all predominant stars. All of these demonstrate the role of Spain as a cradle for great arts.

“NOPHOTO” itself is an active Spanish contemporary photography group consists of 14 members. It is their first exhibition in China. The photography concept “NOPHOTO” seems to be closely linked with the unique creativity of Spain. In fact, their artistic works are focusing on humane solicitude through photography rather than creating a special form of art. Since their establishment, “NOPHOTO” has been paying extensive attention to the humane ecology of various facets of the society, which became their principle. For example: Tanit Plana focuses on feminism and paid special attention to women’s fate; Matías Costa portrays the life of European immigrants and the stowaways; Jorquera has vivid description of common people in the society; Carlos Sanva tracks the growth of the youth; Juan Santos gives an on-the-spot record for the Spanish series bombs in the metro while Iñaki Domingo talks about childhood memory. Every member of “NOPHOTO” has their own orientation of creation, while they share much in common on the emphasis of their works — they all focus on human rights, situation of the society, human nature and so on. There are no colors of postcolonialism, or signals of succumbing to the power, or the popular or exaggerated icons in their works. They seldom set their eyes on their own private space or pure self-expression. The common ground in their works is the record of the nature, society and human beings. That’s why you can often find the most common faces, vague figures, shabby bullrings, smooth lake or even some insignificant old photos.

Most of the “NOPHOTO” members are professional or non-professional photographers. Their capabilities enable them to go beyond the artistic aesthetics and integrate the collective force into the society. This aesthetic attitude enables NOPHOTO to not renounce any form of creation or exhibition. The works by the collective offer an experienced gaze on daily living that always leads to that which is extraordinary. This process is the result of a group reflection and the interaction of alternative creative processes. This is a topic worthy of concern in the context of contemporary arts. It is totally different from our traditional concept of individual artists and individual artistic forms. In stead of using their works to convey their creative ideas, the artists center on a concept and focus on one “thing” through several individual minds and life experiences. These collective artistic activities are more like publicizing a “revolution” or advocating a slogan.

In contemporary world, along with the development of science and technology, press and internet, images have overwhelmed people’s life. We have entered an era, in which we inevitably need to rely on photographic images to understand and sense the world. Thus, how to demonstrate humane solicitude and human spirit through the activity and image of photography is of great importance. Of course, in contemporary China we calls for diversification and respect for individual feelings. No one would be willing to see their own national civilization stay still in the artistic works with slogans of concept, symbols of image and strong sense of postcolonialism. As for artistic creation, we do not mean that every artist should bear the heavy burden of being envoy of human beings, but at least we should involve ourselves into the construction of society and human civilization, and take the task of respecting our own traditions and our own human ecology as one of the most important creative orientations. Since China is undergoing fast development, lots of issues are requiring our concerns. For example, how to maintain the vanishing culture and cultural heritages when the traditional civilization is experiencing extensive crash and rupture by modern civilization … It is a problem of significance to let the youths living in the information era have an objective and positive understanding of people, nature and society with such a highly developed material civilization and maintain the nationalism of their own.

French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson believes that photographic works have significant social responsibility. Every photographer should have a strong sense of honor and be fully aware that a piece of  photographic work without love, understanding of people and recognition of the fate of human beings could by no means be a successful work, no matter how grand the picture is or how great the techniques is.

From this perspective, the first exhibition of “NOPHOTO” is of great significance; perhaps it could shed some light on the progressive contemporary art in China.
