China: Construction/Deconstruction – Chinese Contemporary Art
.
Society is in a constant state of destruction and reconstruction; construction and deconstruction never cease to occur. The establishment of any new system or culture requires the disintegration of the old. This exhibition explores the process of construction and deconstruction of the society, cities, system and indeed mindset of contemporary China as expressed through contemporary art. Artists have approached this subject from diverse angles – a testament to the diversity of the artistic production present in China today. These vary from the direct use of construction materials in Ma Jiawei’s mixed-media and installation work which takes building site construction as an analogy for the construction of human life to the more abstract deconstruction of the human form and its image in the painted work of Mao Yan.
The Museum of Art of Sao Paulo (MASP), Brazil commissioned China: Construction/Deconstruction – Chinese Contemporary Art as an exhibition to showcase the work of 16 Chinese contemporary artists. The exhibition runs from November 18th, 2008 – February 15th, 2009 and has been curated by the Brazilian/German curator Tereza de Arruda. Chinablue Gallery has been heavily involved with the organization and promotion of this exhibition right from its conception by MASP in 2007. Artists include: Ai Weiwei; Chen Bo; He Yunchang; Liu Ding; Ma Jiawei; Mao Yan; Miao Xiaochun; Qin Ga; Qiu Xiaofei; Song Dong; Wang Chengyun; Wang Qingsong; Xiong Yu; Yin Zhaoyang; Zhou Wenzhong and Zhou Xiaohu
This is the first time an exhibition of Chinese contemporary art has been specifically conceived of for a Brazilian museum and has engaged the large Chinese community living in Sao Paulo and become an important actor in promoting cultural dialogue between China and Brazil.
