“Art in Motion”: BMW Art Cars Exhibited Together with Chinese Contemporary Arts
(Shanghai, November 25, 2006)The “Art in Motion” exhibition opens at Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai (MoCA Shanghai). The exhibition features 30+ most famous Chinese contemporary artists along with a selection of 4 BMW Art Cars and 11 miniatures models of the BMW Art Car Collection. The exhibition not only provides the audience a visual feast, but also marks the first stop of the BMW Art Car World Tour in mainland China.
The theme of “Art in Motion” is twofold: On the one hand the BMW Art Cars are arts on wheels crossing the boundaries of technology and arts; on the other hand, Chinese art is developing hand in hand with the international art scene and has entered a state of constant motion.
The four BMW Art Cars on exhibition include the first BMW Art Car, a BMW 3.0CSL created by the American artist Alexander Calder in 1975; the BMW535i designed by the Japanese artist Matazo Koyama in 1990; the BMW 850Csi completed by the British artist David Hockney in 1995 and the newest BMW Art Car, a BMW V12 LMR finished by the American artist Jenny Holzer in 1999.
The exhibited works of the Chinese contemporary artists cover six categories, including From Social Realism to Expressive Individualism; From Romanticism to the Shangri-la of Memory; The Systems and Propagation of Visual Signs; Neo-Literati Art; Material Experimentation and Multimedia Art, and Conceptualism and Crossover. This schema roughly reflects the paths of development of Chinese contemporary art over the past 20 years.
Chinese contemporary artists participating in the exhibition include: Ding Yi, Fang Lijun, Wang Guangyi, Wang Gongxin, Lu Fusheng, Ai Weiwei, Ye Yongqing, Liu Wei, Liu Jianhua, Liu Xiaodong, Liu Ye, Li Shan, Xiang Jing, He Duoling, Zhang Xiaogang, Wu Shanzhuan, Wang Jianwei, Yue Minjun, Lin Tianmiao, Yang Fudong, Zhou Chunya, Luo Zhongli, Zhou Tiehai, Yang Shaobin, Zhan Wang, Yuan Jai, Sui Jianguo, Yu Hong, Zeng Fanzhi, Yan Lei and the Long March Project, showcasing more than forty art pieces representing six diverse artistic styles.
Through the delicate arrangement, the exhibition allows the audience to see the correlations and interactions between Chinese and Western contemporary art. Such interactions enable people to re-consider different aesthetic paradigms, and to redefine what is considered “mainstream” and “alternative”, and ultimately re-evaluate Chinese contemporary art.
The BMW Art Car collection consists of 15 BMW Art Cars to date. Besides works of the artists mentioned above, it also includes works from Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and other masters. Reflecting the cultural-historical development of the integration of art, design and technology, the Art Cars have been exhibited at various museums worldwide, including the Louvre in Paris, the Royal Academy in London, the Whitney Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney.
