Today’s perception of Japanese contemporary art cannot be disassociated from ‘Manga’ or ‘Anime’. The popularity of Japanese manga is evident in all corners of the world today, as the word manga itself has established itself as a well-recognized terminology.

Go Yayanagi and Shinjiro Okamoto are pioneers of the manga-movement in that their artwork consist of stylized lines, shadowless, flat surfaces adorned with vivid colours, and contain strong messages with a touch of humor, all idiosyncratic of Japanese pop. Both artists, at the age of seventy-four, cease to loose their creative energy.

この度、東京画廊+BTAP｜北京では、矢柳剛＋岡本信治郎による連続個展「笑いの哲学(74+74)」を開催いたします。

今日の日本美術といえばマンガ的・アニメ的な作品を想起する人が多いかと思いますが「マンガ」という言葉が諸外国でも通じる言語になりつつあることから見ても、日本のマンガブームは世界中に浸透してきたのは明らかではないでしょうか。

今回BTAPでご紹介する矢柳剛＋岡本信治郎は、40年以上も前から（1960年代）既にマンガ的表現特徴の明快な線描、陰影もない平塗りされた鮮やかな色彩、ユーモア溢れる日本的ポップ、そしてメッセージ性の強い作品を制作してきた稀少の例であり、現在でも先駆的と見られている作家たちです。74歳という年齢にも関わらず、現在も積極的に制作活動を続けております。

まさに、現在のマンガブームの祖型とも言うべき矢柳剛＋岡本信治郎のユーモア溢れる作品を、この機会に是非ご高覧ください。

矢柳刚作品展｜GO YAYANAGI Solo Exhibition 1958-2007

笑的哲学
跨越：交叠的时代灵魂

此次，矢柳刚的个展将展出他的56件作品。其中包括，油画、版画、立体和影像作品（DVD）。

生于1933年的矢柳刚，1957～1959年居住于巴西圣保罗。1965年，远渡巴黎从师版画，3年后归日。他将在海外的经验植入作品中，始终追求着活跃的表现方法。即使现在74岁，还精力充沛的创作着作品。

矢柳刚在创作时，总是将重点置于“色彩”之上。如其所说：“色彩即我的生命”。它不是一个单纯的绘画要素，而是可以于时间和空间体会到的一种表现手段。的确，他的每一件作品都以出色的原色色彩搭配，将艺术家本人的世界观描写的淋漓尽致。

此次展出是自1958年～2007年的作品。虽然时间跨度很大，但是每个作品都蕴涵着共通的愿望。于上世纪70年代发表的《爱的动物志》是以期盼着人类与存在于自然界中的被称作“生命的神秘”的动物之间能够共存为主题。如今，动物的生活环境遭到严重的破坏，我想正是将《爱的动物志》要表达的思想诉之于世的时候了。同样，上世纪70年代出版的《源氏物语版画集》并不是按部就班的复述了古典文学，而是在加入“现在”要素的同时植入作家本身的独创；是一部洋溢着幽默的通俗作品。

矢柳刚所创作的正是跨越了时间、包含着普遍的含义的作品。

The Philosophy of Humour
‘Crossover: Spirit of an Age of Intersection’

On this occasion, Yayanagi will present 56 works, including a range of oil paintings, prints, sculpture and video.
Born in 1933, Yayanagi lived in Sao Paolo, Brazil between 1957-1959. In 1965 he went to Paris, where he spent 3 years studying etching, before returning to Japan. By combining his overseas experience into his works, he was seeking a dynamic form of expression. Now, at the age of 74, he continues to actively create artworks.

Go Yayanagi always emphasizes the element of ‘colour’ when making his work; as the artist says, ‘To me, colour is life’. This is not colour as an element to connect diverse paintings; rather it is a method of expression that allows one to experience space and time. Indeed, regardless of which of Yayanagi’s works one sees, the artist’s world view is evidently being wonderfully depicted in primary colours.

The current exhibition showcases a wide range of work completed between 1958-2007, yet each work also includes a common wish. In the series ‘The Fauna of Love’, completed in the1970s, Yayanagi was concerned with the wish for co-existence between humans and the ‘mystery of life’ in the natural world, animals.

Due to the seriousness of the problem of ongoing destruction to animal habitats at the hands of humans, it is precisely at this time that Yayanagi wishes to transmit the message of works such as 

‘The Fauna of Love’ to the world. Similarly, ‘The Tale of Ganji Print Collection’, also completed in the 1970s, is not simply a depiction of Japanese classical literature as is. While making use of
Yayanagi’s particular approach, this is a print series that combines diverse ‘contemporary’ elements, to produce an artwork brimming with pop style humour.

Yayanagi’s artwork can hence certainly ‘crossing over’ different eras, possessing a universal message.

今回、矢柳剛の展覧会では、油彩と版画、立体造形、そして映像作品（DVD）の合計56点が展示されます。
　
1933年生まれの矢柳剛は1957〜59、ブラジル・サンパウロに在住。1965年にパリへ渡り、3年間エッチングを学んだ後、日本に帰国。海外での経験を作品に取り入れ、躍動的な表現を追求してきました。74歳になる現在も、積極的に作品を制作し続けています。

矢柳剛は、作品を制作する際、常に「色彩」に重点を置くと言います。「色彩は私にとって生命である」と言うように、単なる絵画の一要素としてではなく、時空間で体感できる表現法なのです。確かにどの作品を観ても、原色の色彩が作家の世界観を見事に描写しています。

今回の展覧会では、1958年から2007年までの作品が幅広く展示されますが、どの作品にも共通する願いが込められています。1970年代に発表された「愛の動物誌」シリーズでは、人間と、自然界に存在する「生命の神秘」なる動物との共存を願う気持ちがテーマとなっています。現在人間の手によって破壊されつつある動物の生活環境の問題は深刻であり、「愛の動物誌」のメッセージを今だからこそ世界に発信したいものです。同じく1970年代に出版された「源氏物語版画集」は、日本の古典文学をそのまま描写したのではなく、作家の独自性を生かしながら「現代」に通ずる要素を交えた作品集であり、仕上がりはユーモア溢れるポップ的なものです。矢柳剛の作品はまさに時をクロスオーバーしてユニバーサルなメッセージを持っていることでしょう。

矢柳刚 简历

1933年，生于日本带广市。1951年，毕业于北海道立带广农业高等学校畜产科。后被东京星药科大学录取，于1953年辍学。1957～59年，远渡巴西，居住于圣保罗。此期间历经非洲、新加坡、马尼拉、香港，之后归国。1965～68年渡法，于巴黎的S.W.Hayter工作室17，从师版画。

自1954年起，以东京的展览为首，在世界各国出展。特别是以自1966年起为主，在克拉科夫国际版画双年展（波兰），圣保罗国际双年展（巴西）等重要的世界展览会上，发表了版画作品。1969年，日本艺术生活第3届征集大赛中获奖。1975年，与冈本信治郎氏合作，于东京科学技术博物馆举办了“黄色机械与绿色时代”展。翌年，荣获了由英国国际版画双年展颁发的LuntHumphrey奖项。此后，艺术活动从平面发展到立体，进而扩展到时尚、建筑、环境艺术等多个领域；不仅如此，其艺术活动还涉及影像领域。1988年，在台北的个展上，发表了独创的印刷在晚礼服上的作品。在公共建筑物（壁画）方面，1994年于北海道足寄町的温水泳池内创作了动感十足的名为《生命的跃动》的玻璃马赛克壁画作品。96年于北海道釧路市的机场贵宾厅内发表了《地球与生命的旋律》，作品特有的鲜艳色彩点缀了贵宾厅。由于矢柳刚的很多作品被美术馆收藏，所以以北海道为首，在日本全国都可以看到他的作品。矢柳刚不顾74岁的高龄，还致力于环保行动计划；于巴西的伊瓜苏大瀑布进行了行为艺术“从天上播种”。

Go Yayanagi – Artist Biography

Born in Obihiro (Hokkaido), in 1933, Yayanagi graduated Hokkaido Obihiro Agricultural High School, majoring in Animal Husbandry, in 1951. He subsequently entered Tokyo’s Hoshi University, but withdrew in 1953. From 1957-1959 Yayanagi lived in Sao Paolo, Brazil, as well as travelling through Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong and Manila, before returning to Japan. Between 1965 and 1968 he again went abroad, and lived in Paris; where he studied woodblock printing at S.W.Heyter’s ‘Atelier 17’.

Beginning with his 1954 exhibition in Tokyo, Yayanagi has continued to exhibit, not only in Japan, but in many countries internationally. Particularly from 1966, he took part in exhibitions such as the International Print Biennale of Krakow, Poland, and the Sao Paolo Biennale, Brazil, showing numerous print works all around the world. In 1969 he won the Grand Prize at the 3rd Art Life Invitational Exhibition. In 1975, he and Shinjiro Okamoto held their exhibition ‘Yellow machine & Green Times’ at the Science Museum, Tokyo; and the following year was awarded the LuntHumphrey Prize at the British International Print Biennale. Yayanagi then widened the scope of his art, shifting from graphics to sculptural works, then fashion, architecture and environmental art, as well as film and video. For his

1988 solo exhibition in Taipei, Yayanagi made original designs onto printed fabric, and then used this to create a dress. For a public mural in 1994, Yayanagi created a lively glass mosaic, entitled ‘Motion of Life’, in the Ashoro-chou heated pool, Hokkaido. In 1996, for the VIP room of Kushiro City Airport, Hokkaido, Yayanagi created ‘Rhythm of Earth and Life’; in which he painting the entire VIP space in a unique, vivid colour. As his works have been collected by museums all over the country, starting with Hokkaido, it is now such that Yayanagi’s artwork can be seen, and enjoyed throughout Japan. Now, despite being 74 years of age, Yayanagi is planning his next project, he has a burning desire to realize an ecology project: a performance, “sowing seeds from the air”, at the Iguazu Falls, in Brazil.

1954年、東京での展覧会を始め、日本のみならず世界各国で展覧会を開催。特に1966年からは主に、クラコウ国際版画ビエンナーレ(ポーランド)、サンパウロ国際ビエンナーレ(ブラジル)など、数多くの版画を世界中で発表。1969年には、芸術生活第３回公募コンクールにてグランプリを受賞。1975年、科学技術館(東京)にて岡本信治郎との「イエロー・マシン＆グリーン・タイムス」展を開催し翌年、英国国際版画展にてルント・ハンフリー賞受賞。以降、活動を平面から立体へ、そしてファッション、建築、環境アートへと広げる。更には、映像作品も手がける。1988年、台北で行われた個展では、プリントした生地に独創的なデザインによるドレスを発表。また、公共建築物（壁画）では1994年、北海道足寄町温水プールにて＜生命の躍動＞（ガラスモザイク）という躍動感あふれる壁画を製作。また、96年には北海道釧路市空港のVIPルームにて＜地球と生命のリズム＞を発表し、特有の鮮やかな色彩でVIPルームを彩る。矢柳剛の作品は数多くの美術館にて収蔵されているため、北海道をはじめ、日本全国で作品を見る事が可能。そして、現在74歳という年齢にも関わらず、次なる課題「イグワスの滝」BRASILに「空から種を蒔く」行為。エコロジープロジェクト行動計画に意欲を燃やしている。
