Li Chen, born in 1963, who’s round and complete sculptures enable viewers to feel the co-existence of emptiness and fullness, and the simplicity brimming with the beauty of natural style, expressing unique and new oriental spirit and conception. Following the success of Li Chen’s “Energy of Emptiness” Exhibition at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007 and his more recent “In search of Spiritual Space” at the National Art Museum of China, Li Chen’s works takes a new shift in 2008 with the unveiling of his brand-new series for the very first time to the public in “Soul Guardian – Mirror of Our Innermost World.”
After witnessing the unstable world with numerous disasters and accidents for the last decade, Li Chen decided to base his creation on the spiritual realization of the existential state of the shared human experience at a time of natural calamities and man-made disasters. He attempts to discuss the meaning of God’s existence to men, hoping to infuse the traditional spirit with modern art. “Soul Guardian” expresses Chinese myths and the concept of “Five Elements” that have existed for thousands of years in a modern manner, projecting all kinds of spirits and meanings through simple figures. The exhibition also, for the first time, uses large sculptures to create a distinctive spatial installation. Large sculptures as tall as 3.5 meters, hanging in the air or looking down from the central stage, all create a stunning space and atmosphere. Li Chen stated, “Everything is uncertain and has an illusionary sense of value resulting from accidents and disasters.” When visitors enter the exhibition hall, they can instantly experience the thousand-year-old ancient spirits of China with an astonishing vision of modern art.
