"One of the most interesting conceptual artists at work in China today, Geng Jianyi is not content to accept anything at face value. It is not arrogance, but uncertainty born of curiosity that leads him to question the world he inhabits, its customs and rituals, as much as the art he makes. Identity has been one of the most important subjects for artists in China, and is a subject Jianyi has analysed for almost two decades. This work explores the effect of consciousness upon the largely unconscious and familiar actions that come to define us." Geng Jianyi (1962 Henan) was among the early stars of the contemporary art movement in China. In the 1980s, as a member of the so-called Pool Society in Hangzhou, Geng worked alongside artists like Zhang Peili and Wang Qiang producing sarcastic, cynical and inventive and politically loaded examinations of life. The group's "Gray Humor" piece were popular in the 1980s and Geng's laughing faces became a symbol of the era and perhaps even a precursor of the images that Yue Minjun later adopted for his art works. In the 1990s, Geng was often overlooked or forgotten, but he is once again creating imaginative works in photography, oil and installations, examining the details of life and exploring questions of identity. He now lives and works in Hangzhou and teaches at the China Academy of Fine Arts.

Geng Jianyi’s focus was on the inner practice of exhibition making; the issues such as, whether the end product of an art work or an exhibition is the only valid form of presentation and representation; and is not the unseen process behind the scene of any cultural production a legitimate part to be shown, exhibited.

Geng JianYi 耿建翌

Born in Zhenzhou, Henan province in 1962, Geng Jianyi holds a degree in oil painting from Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, where he currently lives. Geng Jianyi is an important figure in Chinese contemporary art, and he has participated many of the major exhibitions of Chinese art in China and abroad. He demonstrates an intense concern about self-awareness and the multitude of forms by which the individual is expressed and represented.

1962年在河南郑州出生，毕业于浙江美术学院油画专业，现定居于杭州。他是中国当代艺术的代表人物之一，曾参加国内外众多著名展览。在其作品中，耿建翌论证了他对个人意识的热切关注，并且运用了各种不同的艺术手段创作来表达和体现“自我”。

Geng Jianyi’s works have been widely exhibited since his first show in 1989. Exhibitions include The Real Thing-Contemporary Art from China, Tate Liverpool, UK and IVAM, Spain (2007/08); Zooming into Focus, National Art Museum of China (2005); 5th Shanghai Biennale: Techniques of the Visible, Shanghai Art Museum (2004); Geng Jianyi - Useless, BizART (Shanghai, 2004); 4th Gwangju Biennale (2002); Living in Time - Contemporary Artists from China, Hamburger Bahnhof (Berlin, 2001); Inside Out: New Chinese Art Exhibition, New York (1999) and Cities on the Move, Secession Vienna (and other locations,1997); 45th Venice Biennale, Italy .
