Concept: You know then
Kathryn Gray works with negotiating contingency as an act of invention. While in Kunming she is seeking out local expertise in accumulation and disappearance, considering rules for individuals and systems and empires. With such research and conversation she plans to script small melodramas for collaborative reenactment. Through others’ rhetoric and methodology, Kathryn contends with issues including productivity, profit as well as illusion and loss. Production requires rigorous logic and implausibility, and we all play parts with the artifice and affects. Kathryn is an Australian artist based in Sydney, and her residency is supported by the Ian Potter Cultural Trust. See more at www.likely.net.au.

我的作品包括摄影、影像、装置和行为,并逐渐地围绕与身体有关的社会和自然环境之间的关系为艺术研究方向。
我早期的作品以照片和影像的方式记录我身体在类似宗教仪式的地方的出现,常常是重复的行为。有时候我利用一些其他的元素来改变身体的动作从而将这些动作变成一种束缚,相反的我也寻求着一种解放的状态。总之我想让我的作品使人感伤,或者创造一个感性的世界。
我的一部分作品主要是以身体与自然,有机元素和自然风景的关系为主(如《杂草丛生的地方/ Wildernesses》)。后来,我逐渐通过身体与自然元素关系的探究发现了巨大的像树一样的象征性价值。
基于这样的理念,我创作了《在室外/ En plein air》,以一系列图片记录了由树枝构建的“建筑”。在另一件行为装置作品《变体/ Corpo variabile》中我尝试把身体融入到这个建筑中。
作品是计划的,但在实施的同时又是即兴的。这些建筑往往最后会以不一样的形式呈现,这都取决于装置所使用的材料和与场景的融合。 其奇特的形状让这些装置显得很奇妙,也可能会让人对大自然所创造的奇形怪状而感到惊讶。这个理念引发了我更多的虚构和超现实的想象力,作品《遥远的身体/ Remote Body》以视频和图片展示了变形的想象。在这部作品里我尝试让自己变成一棵树,试图在融合的同时产生束缚感。
融合这个想法也是对图片作品《形体的改变/ Metamorphosis》的再创作和深化。在这件作品里,植物界各种各样的元素和形态被丑化了以“静物”的方式呈现,这种丑化使得这些元素变得模糊不清并变得与其他形态相似。
在这种意义上,一些风景的图片也表达了我的这种理念。如黑白照片系列《思想的黑暗/Darkness of the mind》,或者是影像《为了最后一次呼吸/To the last breath》,有着浓郁的神秘与超自然现象的色彩,也隐射着那些被打扰着却吸引我们的地方。
我感兴趣的是创造一个精神上的、原始的、一个真正的按照自然规律发展的地方。这个地方很遥远,并且给人以落后或者未来、荒野或者世界末日的形象,而这种形象就象人性在镜子中那么的神秘不可穿越。
Sabrina Muzi(Italy) STATEMENT
Artist-in-residence time:Oct 6, 2010 – Jan 3, 2011
My work involves photography, video, installation and performance, and my artistic research has progressively focused on themes concerning with human body in its relations with social and natural environment.
Initially in most of my work, I created videos and photographs where I perform my own body through actions that appear like a kind of ritual, where I usually make actions, often repeated: sometimes I transform my body connecting it with other elements and bringing it to a constraint or, on the contrary, I look for open situations of liberation, in any case i want to give an idea of a pathos and to create an emotional universe.
In some of works I put in relation the human body with natural and organic elements (in my work “Wildernesses” for example) and with the natural landscape.
Lately I progressively explored this aspect of my research through the connection of the body with elements of nature that have a strong symbolic value, such as the tree.
Working on this concept, I created the work "En plein air", by photographing a series of modular structures made of branches that I've previously built. Also in the installation-performance “Corpo variabile” i created one of this structure and then i made a performance tying myself whit it.
The development of this work is designed and extemporaneous at the same time: always when I made these structures, finally they appear in different ways because the result of the final installation depends on the form of the material I use and also by the place where they are fit.
So, they can seem fantastic buildings that, by their strange shape, may surprise in the same manner as may be surprising all forms created by nature.
Continuing in this direction but evoking a more mythical and surreal imagery I created a video and a photographic work called "Remote Body" in which is suggested the concept of metamorphosis. In this work i try to transform myself in a tree, an attempt of merging and constriction at the same time.
This idea of merging is also resumed and deepened in another photographic work titled "Metamorphosis" where various elements of the plant world are presented as a sort of "still life" and their semblance, since disfigured, becomes ambiguous and appear to be close to other types of forms.
In this sense, also the images of landscapes, represented in some of my works, such as the black/white photographic series "Darkness of the mind", or in the video "To the last breath" shrouded in a mysterious and metaphysical atmosphere, suggest places that seem disturb and captivate us at the same time.
What I'm interested is to match the vision of a real physical place with an interior, psychological and archetypal one and, more in general, with an imagery in which shapes evoke remote places, primitive or future visions, wild or apocalyptic landscapes: images of the mind as a mirror image of the impenetrable mystery of human nature.
